Let Go and Recover
Therapy is a space where individuals gain insight and awareness into their emotional, relational and behavioural struggles.
Joanne Burns
Counselling Psychologist
I am a Counselling Psychologist with 10 years of experience working with individuals, families and groups in inpatient and outpatient settings. My special interests include Eating Disorders, Addiction, Anxiety, Depression, Codependency and Relationship dynamics.
My passion for working in the treatment of Eating Disorders started soon after I qualified as a Counselling Psychologist. After a brief stint of work at a university’s therapeutic unit, I joined the team at Montrose Manor, an Eating Disorder Clinic in Bishopscourt, Cape Town. I gained a wealth of knowledge from my experienced colleagues, but much of my learning has been through sitting in the chair across from those who are suffering. This is where my passion for helping those with Eating Disorders was born. Across the board of human suffering, regardless of the particular blockage, there is a human journey which needs to be shared, and explored to be understood and healed.
Treatment Approach
My theoretical orientation is insight oriented or Psycho-dynamic in nature, however I like to include Psycho-education, skills, tools, and resources where appropriate.
I have completed a two year Group Analytic Training course at the Centre for Group Analytic Studies (CGAS), which means the therapy component of the groups I run are open and exploratory in nature.

"I first started working with Joanne during my time in an inpatient clinic. She helped me break down the barriers and I started to get my smile back again which had been missing for so long. Following on from my discharge, I carried on working with Joanne as I felt my therapy journey had only just begun. I cannot thank Joanne enough for all that she has done for me on my recovery journey."
